World Language Certificates, Seals, and College Credit in Minnesota: An Update from the Minnesota Department of Education

Presenter: Ursula Lentz is the World Language and English Learner Specialist at the Minnesota Department of Education.

Did you know that Minnesota students can officially demonstrate their language proficiency world language proficiency certificates and bilingual seals and potentially earn college credit? If this is news to you, come to this session to find out about the Minnesota legislature's efforts to encourage students' proficiency in multiple languages.

Based on legislation passed in 2009, the Minnesota Department of Education offers world language proficiency certificates to students who can demonstrate intermediate-low and intermediate-mid/high proficiency on a validated assessment. Legislation passed in the 2014 session established state bilingual and multilingual seals and added a requirement for MN state universities to give college credit to students who earn a seal. This session will provide an update on further efforts to amend/improve the legislation and will allow time for Q & A.
