We will be meeting with Karen Balmer, the Executive Director of the Minnesota Board of Teaching, and Erin Doan, the Alternative Assessment Specialist at the Board of Teaching, to discuss the proposed Alternative Licensing Program. We would like to come prepared with questions and suggestions.
Read the "Approval to Provide Alternative Teacher Preparation Programs," a document created by the Board of Teaching,
here
.
Several concerns have already surfaced with regard to alternative licensing for immersion teachers. Please add your own ideas or questions to this list when you register.
Teachers whose first language is not English have difficulty passing the PRAXiS which is not offered in languages other than English.
Teachers who are certified to teach in their home countries may be able to teach in Minnesota, for a limited time, with a Community Expert waiver but cannot, in many cases, get credit for coursework taken, degrees earned, or certificates and licenses granted in their countries of origin and must consider redoing everything in the US in order to receive a teaching license.
